Thank you 2021
Thank you 2021.
It was the year of Grace. What we were so afraid of losing in 2020 took on a very different hue in 2021. The value of earning zero can never be underestimated. How much more grateful are you then when zero transforms into one and then two and beyond? 😊
2021 was a year of walking to the beat of my own heart. I said no more than I said yes. But I also said yes more than I said no.
It was a year where music found me again. Writing. Producing. Recording. Releasing. 2021 hummed loud enough for me to sing along again.
Albert Einstein said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” So after writing thousands of letters to politicians across Australia in 2020, I stopped asking for help for our industry and instead began to feel empathy for those humans trapped inside a system in its death spiral.
It became clear that no one was coming to save us. I had to be the change that I was looking for myself. So 2021 became the BYO year. Be Your Own Industry Body. Be your own Funding Partner. Be your own Government. Be your Own Doctor. Be Your Own Media. Be Your Own Counsel. Be Your Own Researcher. Be Your Own Educator. Be Your Own Steward. Be Your Own Resource.
I began 2021 with two podcasts. There was so much to say, but it was clear that the echo chamber of 2021 simply did not have the capacity to hear anything other than its own terrified voice. So 2021 became the year to simply listen and observe.
Refraining from posting on Social Media gave me the space to do just that — listen and observe. 2021 was an opportunity to sit in the cheap seats and watch the foolishness of the theatre that unfolded instead.
In 2021, my favorite uncle finally let go of this world. My right leg was black and blue as I pinched it relentlessly while delivering his eulogy. Not crying at his funeral was the toughest thing I have ever done. I miss him more than words can say.
While humanity lived more in the virtual world, 2021 saw me crafting a greater tactile and visceral experience in my daily life by gardening and growing our own food. I once asked my uncle what his secret was as a farmer. He said “Nic, its all about the soil. You look after that, and you can grow anything.” So 2021 has taken me on a journey through worms, compost, ph balance, nutrients and the right hydration balance. In the garden.
And also in my body. 2021 was a keystone year for my health. What a ride! The same principles for the garden mirrored my health regime as I worked with the whole terrain. What I used to believe was illness had actually been my body’s inherent intelligent method for detoxification. Pure genius!
If I ever wanted to know what I was made of, 2021 sure gave me plenty of opportunities to find out.
In 2021 I visited Townsville to re trace my childhood nightmares. My sensitive creative responsible little inner seven-year-old can now finally relax.
Going back to Uni in 2021 to study Design UX reconnected me to the world of colour, texture, shape, line, value, form and space reminding me of the beauty all around me. By far the best thing I did in a long time!
2021 took my book about the Music Industry to its final editing stage. Almost ready to publish.
And our business truly was the canary in a coal mine in 2021. Open. Close. Reactivate. Reinvent. Open. Close. Pivot. Adapt. Rinse and Repeat. We developed new ways of doing everything and changed the course of the entire enterprise. What a magical year it has been for us! I am so proud of our team and cannot wait to see what 2022 has in store.
I wish you grace for the year to come.
